South Dakota has landed a commitment from Malcolm Weatherspoon, a 6-foot-3 guard in the Class of 2027 out of Central Catholic High School in Portland, Oregon.
Weatherspoon announced his decision Thursday following official visits to South Dakota and Oregon State. The Coyotes’ vision for his future proved persuasive, with the staff identifying him as a point guard capable of eventually leading its backcourt.
The decision gives South Dakota a prospect who connected with both the program’s basketball plan and the environment in Vermillion. The relationships built during his visit and the staff’s continued attention afterwardhelped the Coyotes close his recruitment.
For South Dakota, the intriguing part is his potential growth as a lead guard. Weatherspoon will have an opportunity to develop his decision-making and the physical strength needed to handle that responsibility at the Division I level. How he progresses will help determine his eventual role.
His commitment also gives him  focus entering his senior season at Central Catholic: pursuing a state championship. With his college destination settled, Weatherspoon can turn his attention toward leading the Rams and preparing for the transition to the Summit League.
South Dakota sold him on a future in its backcourt. His final high school season offers the next opportunity to build toward it.
