2024 F Asa Newell has committed to UGA, making him the highest ranked recruit to commit to the Bulldawgs since Anthony Edwards, the NBA number one pick in 2020.
Mike White was hired as the UGA men’s basketball head coach in 2022 to change the culture and to consistently raise the talent level of his roster, Asa Newell does that.
Newell, playing for Montverde Academy as well as 1Family on the AAU circuit, has the desired package for the evolving big forward in today’s game. He shines as a pick and pop, trail three shooter, can catch on the move and finish at the rim while showing a soft touch in the paint. On the defensive end he is very good weak-side defender and rebounds it well.
The commitment from Newell shows that Mike White can get 5-Star recruits to UGA and opens the door for others to consider the Bulldawgs. The SEC is loaded with top teams and is not for the faint of heart and a strong roster is an antidote to success. UGA had a strong recruiting class in 2023, ranked in the top 20 nationally and 2024 is off to a great start! UGA beat out Texas, Alabama and Gonzaga.
